Surprised by Joy – C. S. Lewis
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Rebecca Skloot
A Chance to Die – Elizabeth Elliot
Meet the Austins – Madeline L’Engle
America the Beautiful – Ben Carson
Only the River Runs Free – Bodie and Brock Thoene
I checked these out on Wednesday as my stack for December, but I’ve already finished two of them: Meet the Austins and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. L’Engle’s novel was slightly disappointing. I suppose I expected something similar to A Wrinkle in Time, and Meet the Austins was comparatively normal. Skloot’s book, however, was intriguing and I would definitely recommend it. It traces the true story of the Lacks family and the poor black woman who died unnoticed at John Hopkins in 1951. Before she died, doctors took cancer cells from her body. Those cells reproduced at an alarming rate and are now used all over the world for medical research. The book recognizes Henrietta’s life and contribution to medicine, and explores racial dynamics and medical ethics. Science generally does not interest me, but The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is well written an definitely worth reading.
